Compass Band

Winter of 2012 began with Junior Eurovision in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This was the second time after 2007 when The Netherlands hosted Eurovision Song Contest.  This time motto of the contest was “Break the Ice”. That is why, juniors from 12 participant countries, broke the ice of Dutch winter with their hot and lovely performances. One of them was Armenian pop band “Compass Band”.

When four friends; David, Abraham, Arshavir and Aram, gathered together for Christmas concert in 2011 they didn’t even imagine that one year later their band would represent their country in  Junior Eurovision. "Compass Band" won National Selections in Armenia with a song called “Sweetie Baby” in 30th September, 2012 and on 26th of November they already were on the way to Amsterdam.

The song was written by the soloist David Paronikyan, the style of which is implying about their love toward the legendary rock band The Beatles.  Boys are singing for their beloved girl. Although she ignores them, they want her always to smile, because her smile brings sun to the world.
Black suit and tie, John Lennon style round black glasses for one of the guitarists, McCartney style haircut of the vocalist; the performance in Heineken Music Hall itself was in “The Beatles” style. Even the official video of the Song was done in 60’s manner.

According to the voting "Compass Band" won third place with total 98 points. They received points almost from all the participating countries from which two- the highest 12 points – were from Ukraine and Georgia. Armenian twelve points went to Ukraine; for Anastasiya Petryk’s song Nebo (Sky), which finally with total 138 points won Junior Eurovision 2012.

This contest was a good start and inspirations for “Armenian Beatles” as it has always been for many young musicians.
